From Antiquing to Dinner: A Simple Summer Gathering with Friends

I have really been leaning in to keeping entertaining simple and this simple summer gathering is exactly that. One my favourite ways to spend a summer day is heading out with a few friends to spend the day wandering around antique and thrift stores to see what treasures we can find! Instead of dinner out, I thought why not set a pretty table where we could come back and have a relaxed evening lingering over good conversation and good food!

Today I am joining 15 table decor enthusiasts, brought together by Rita from Panoply, as we share our vision for the perfect summer table decor. Be it a patriotic table for summer celebrations or simple ideas for dining al fresco, be sure to visit all the links at the end of this post!

I set my table using simple dinnerware and flowers cut from the garden, my focus wasn’t on perfection and I didn’t want anything over the top. Just the essentials that speak to summer and the slowing down.

Easy Summer Entertaining

The best summers have moments spent at outdoor gatherings around the table. This reminds me that true hospitality is not about impressing your guests, but instead being present, making your guests feel relaxed, welcomed and appreciated!

Creating a Summer Gathering Using What You Have

My golden rule for entertaining is that a beautiful table doesn’t require a shopping trip. For this gathering with friends, I used dishes, linens, and serving pieces already tucked away in my cupboards.  Some purchased from past days spend thrifting!

Green is my favourite colour and you’ll find lots of it both my linen cupboard and china cabinet! Different shades of green create a fresh summer feel, while a few touches of pink from the peonies, and napkins add a pop of colour. Mixing everyday pieces with a few vintage treasures gives the table a collected look that feels welcoming and relaxed.

If you’ve recently been antiquing or thrifting, this is the perfect opportunity to put those finds to use. Vintage glassware, serving bowls, and decorative accents add character and help tell the story of your home.

Garden Flowers for an Effortless Summer Centrepiece

Fresh flowers are my love language and one of the easiest ways elevate any summer gathering.

For this table, I clipped freshly blooming peonies and mock orange branches from my own garden and arranged them in a simple thrifted stone jug. The result is natural, relaxed, and perfectly suited to outdoor entertaining.

If you don’t have a flower garden, inexpensive grocery store bouquets, flowering branches, potted plants, or even just greenery cut from the yard can create the same effect. Hosta leaves in different shades of green make gorgeous centrepieces. The goal isn’t a formal arrangement but rather bringing a bit of the colour, texture and the season to the table.

Uncluttered Place Settings

Some occasions call for a formal place setting with multiple stemware and plate stacks for multiple courses and I am all for those when required, but a casual gathering you can loosen the rules a bit.

For this summer gathering I kept the place settings simple and uncluttered. Heavy dark green stoneware dinner plates are topped with more delicate green transferware salad plates. Green acrylic stemware at each place setting works for whatever beverage guests prefer.

Soft jute place mats and flatware with “twig’ handles lend themselves to the outdoor casual summer theme.

Simple white napkins with just a hint of pink and green tie into the centrepiece. And, the white tablecloth with a green flower print provides a simple understated background.

Menu Ideas for a Casual Summer Dinner

Here are a few menu ideas that are perfect for a fuss-free summer dinner party:

Choose recipes that are easy to prepare or can be made ahead of time so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time relaxing with your friends! A perfect combination is a simple appetizer and a big summer pasta salad.  Fuss free entertaining at its’ simplest!

My Best Tips for Hosting a Relaxed Summer Gathering

Use What You Already Own

A beautiful outdoor meal certainly doesn’t require newly purchased, match-matchy decor. (But, if that’s what will make the event happy for you then go for it!) Remember my golden rule – shop your own home first and don’t be afraid to mix and match for a collected, cozy feel. Or consider borrowing from a friend or neighbour.

a simple centrepiece

Fresh flowers or greens cut from your garden in an old chippy vessel is all you need to create the best summer centrepiece. A pretty summer dessert like this strawberry layer cake also makes a stunning edible centrepiece.

Create Comfortable Seating

The more comfortable the chairs, the longer your friends will want to gather! Add cushions to chairs and light throw blankets tossed over the back to use if the evening is expected to cool off. Leaving plenty of room for each place setting and keeping the table uncluttered also makes for a relaxed and comfortable evening.

Keep the Menu Simple

Plan to serve dishes that you can make ahead of time since you’ll not want to be stuck in the kitchen while your friend are outside!  A big salad loaded with fresh greens, feta cheese, and raspberries is a great choice for a summer starter.  Don’t be afraid to purchase a main dish and pick it up on the way back for your thrifting adventures!

Plan for the Weather

Set your table in the shade if you can.  My old farmhouse table sits under a pergola and beside a huge limelight hydrangea that provides dappled shade to keep things cool.  As the sun comes around having a large patio umbrella (or even individual umbrellas for each guest) can provide additional shade if necessary. And of course, having a spot indoors or on a covered patio should rain be in the forecast. By planning there’s no need to worry about the weather!

Add a Few Personal Touches

Special touches such as candles, cloth napkins, vintage glassware, unique flatware, or a little take-home gift can make guests extra-special. The sweet frog pitcher on my table is borrowed from a friend. She is my antiquing bestie, and I can always count on findings something fun at her house to use on my tables! Take a look at her screen porch decorated intirely of thrifted and antique finds! We helped her give it a complete rebuild several years ago!

Focus on Relaxation and Connection, not Perfection

The most memorable summer gatherings are rarely the over-the-top ones.  They’re the ones filled with laughter, conversation, and the feeling of contentment knowing that everyone is welcome just as they are.

End the Evening Slowly

As the sun begins to set, light a few candles set in glass lanterns, refresh the glasses of lemonade, or set out a carafe of coffee or tea, and truly sit back and savour the moment.  Linger around the table simply soaking in the conversation.

Throw out the notion that entertaining requires elaborate menus, perfect decorations, and weeks of preparation. In reality, the gatherings people remember most are often the simplest.

A thoughtfully set table, a meal and good conversation shared with friends are all that’s needed to create lasting summer memories.

    1. Maureen I love your table’s simplicity and you are right…entertaining is more about the conversations and being comfortable…the food doesn’t even matter as long as one is visiting with friends. The memories are the important part of entertaining. My favorite flower is the peony. I love the fragrance and they are just so stately. Once I found a perfume with a peony fragrance but then it was discontinued…I guess not everyone loved the smell but I certainly do. Your bouquet is lovely and I adore the frog pitcher…so cute and whimsical. The green in your dishes and glassware are also perfect for summer.
I like that you always give us good tips for setting a table or entertaining….you know prepare for rain if necessary, etc. I always look forward to your tables . Have a great and wonderful summer…and keep on keepin’ on. from up North.

    2. Maureen, I’m completely of the same mind when it comes to shop-your-home-first styling. Your beautiful table exemplifies simple elegance, and your peonies are gorgeous! I also really love the napkins you used. Blessings, Cecilia – My Thrift Store Addiction
