Tips for Best Results

  • allow ground beef filling to cool a before filling dough to prevent sogginess
  • seal the edges well with a fork to keep the filling from spilling out when baking
  • cut or poke vents into the top of each pie before baking
  • don’t over fill – these make quite generous sized hand pies, and I find about 1/3 cup each of filling and shredded cheese is a good amount but add a bit more or less as you like
  • for a golden crust brush well with an egg wash made with a beaten egg and a splash of milk
  • use freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded

Variation Ideas

These cheeseburger hand pies are easy to customize

  • add some chopped bacon and cook with the onion and ground beef
