Ingredients You’ll Need
- Prepared pizza dough
- Lean ground beef or a vegan meat substitute such as Beyond Beef like I use
- Onion
- Tomato sauce
- Italian seasoning
- Cheddar cheese, shredded

- Cook onion and ground beef until browned and cooked through, drain fat and add Italian seasoning and tomato sauce. Stir to combine and heat through.
- Divide pizza dough into 6 equal dough balls. Flatten each dough ball into a rough circle. about 1/4 inch thick. Add about 1/3 cp of ground mixture on one half of the dough, leaving about a half inch edge. Top with a handful of grated cheddar cheese.
- Fold dough over filling and use a fork to press and seal the edges. Transfer to parchment paper lined baking sheet and brush with and egg wash. Use a fork or sharp knife to poke vent holes on the top of each hand pie.
- Bake in oven preheated to 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, until dough is puffed, golden brown and cooked through.

Tips for Best Results
- allow ground beef filling to cool a before filling dough to prevent sogginess
- seal the edges well with a fork to keep the filling from spilling out when baking
- cut or poke vents into the top of each pie before baking
- don’t over fill – these make quite generous sized hand pies, and I find about 1/3 cup each of filling and shredded cheese is a good amount but add a bit more or less as you like
- for a golden crust brush well with an egg wash made with a beaten egg and a splash of milk
- use freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded

- add some chopped bacon and cook with the onion and ground beef
- try a different type of cheese such as mozzarella or Monterey Jack
- add a teaspoon of mustard, ketchup or dill pickle relish on top of the cheese
- sprinkle egg washed pies with Everything seasoning before baking

Storage
Store leftover hand pies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in a 350°F oven or air fryer until heated through to keep the crust nice and crispy.
Can be frozen in an airtight container for up to a month. Reheat in 350 degree oven until heated through.

Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef or vegan ground beef alternative
- ½ cup chopped onion
- 8 ounce can of tomato sauce
- ¾ teaspoon Italian seasoning blend
- 2 cups freshly shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 pound prepared uncooked pizza dough
- 1 egg, beaten with a splash of milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400℉ and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Brown ground beef and onion in a large frying pan until fully cooked. (Beef is done when it reaches 165 ℉ when tested with instant read meat thermometer).
- Stir in tomato sauce and Italian seasoning until well blended. Continue cooking for 2 to 3 minutes until heated through. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
- Divide pizza dough into 6 equal sized balls. On a lightly floured surface roll each dough ball into a rough circle shape about 1/4 inch thick. Spoon about ⅓ cup filling onto half of the rolled pizza dough and top with ⅓ cup shredded cheese. Fold dough over to cover filling and seal edges well with a fork. Repeat with each dough ball.
- Transfer each hand pie to prepared baking sheets and brush well with egg wash and poke with a sharp knife or fork to vent each pie. Bake in 400℉ oven for 15 to 20 minutes, until pizza dough is nicely puffed, golden and cooked through.
