A simple grilled hamburger gets an instant upgrade with a layer of homemade pimento cheese spread, creating a burger that’s perfect for backyard grilling, casual dinners and everything in between.

Around here burgers are always a good idea, especially in grilling season, and I’m always looking for a way to make a good burger even better! This idea came to me in the spring after our Master’s golf party. We were lucky enough to attend the Masters tournament several years back and I fell in love with both the incredible landscape and the infamous pimento cheese sandwiches. Now I make homemade pimento cheese filling and enjoy sandwiches every year at home!

That got me thinking how delicious this creamy cheese mixture would taste melted on a freshly grilled hamburger. I assure you it does not disappoint!

A Few Tips Before You Start

  • DO NOT USE PRE-SHREDDED CHEESE (sorry about the all caps, but this is important)! Pre-shredded cheese is coated so that it doesn’t get clumpy and this affects how well it will melt
  • you can make the cheese spread a day or two ahead of time and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Promptly return leftover cheese spread to the refrigerator
  • use your favourite homemade hamburger patties or good quality premade burgers from the grocery store – either fresh or frozen is fine
  • fully cook the burgers before adding the pimento cheese spread, then continue to heat over low until cheese is melted
  • This cheese spread recipe makes enough for about 6 to 8 burgers

Variation Ideas

  • make this burgers with your favourite homemade hamburger patty recipe
  • use spiced Monterey Jack cheese if you like a little kick
  • top with slices of crispy bacon
  • add finely diced onion to the cheese mixture
  • use any leftover cheese spread to make the classic Masters sandwich using two pieces of white sandwich bread

Serve these yummy burgers alongside Cashew Chicken Pasta Salad or set up a Baked Potato Bar for guests to create their own side!

Do I need a grill to make these?

Absolutely not! I make them all year long either in the frying pan or bake the hamburger patties before topping with the cheese spread and heating until melted.

Can I use store-bought Pimento Cheese Spread

You could, however it isn’t easy to find everywhere, as it seems to be more popular in the southern US. I will always recommend homemade over store-bought whenever possible.

How to Store Leftovers

Store leftovers promptly. Place cheese spread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Store any leftover cooked hamburger patties in an ziplock bag in the fridge for up to 2 days or in the freezer (without the cheese spread) for up to a month.
