Fall Tablescape Ideas: Nancy Meyers Meets English Cottage
Looking for fall tablescape ideas that feel warm and welcoming without going all-in on orange pumpkins? I’m so excited to share this one with you today! This early fall tablescape combines two of my favourite things, the timeless, relaxed style of Nancy Meyers with the charm of an English Cottage.

My table was inspired by the fact that I have finally hit my stride when it comes to my decor style. English cottage is near and dear to my heart but I also absolutely love the calm, classic interiors of Nancy Meyers movie sets. What fun would it be to host a movie marathon featuring a few of her classics and enjoy dinner around a table inspired by those very movies.
Nancy Meyers Inspired Decor For the Fall Table
The elements inspired by her classic style include:
- natural, neutral colours
- linen fabrics
- classic white dinner plates
- simple, elegant glassware
- brass candlesticks
- a simple and unfussy foundation
- a table that feels elegant but meant to be used and enjoyed
Adding English Country Charm
The table would not reflect my style if I didn’t include the cozy cottage charm that I adore, including:
- botanical salad plates with a scalloped border
- woven placemats that have a soft scallop to complement the salad plates
- fresh green pears that are in season throughout early to mid autumn
- creamy faux pumpkins that add a nod to the season without being overbearing
- rustic garden flowers plucked from the garden and hedgerows
- the overall slightly imperfect, collected look

How The Two Styles Come Together
The fun part was finding a balance between the two styles. I didn’t want the table to feel too formal for an English cottage, but also didn’t want it to become overly rustic. Keeping the foundation simple and classic allowed the floral centrepiece, the pears and natural textures to bring in the relaxed cottage feeling.
For me this is what early fall decorating is all about. Rather than changing the entire look of the table, I like to add a few simple touches that speak to the season ahead. The pears, creamy pumpkins and aging garden flowers do just enough to make the table feel ready for autumn
No-Cost Garden Centrepiece
I chose one of my favourite stone pitchers as the base for the centrepiece. It’s the perfect neutral colour with a bit of texture for interest. It feels both classic and cottagey at the same time.
The gorgeous hydrangeas have been gracing my garden since early summer when they came into bloom in bright pink. They have aged perfectly to shades of deep pink and burgundy which I love for fall. My miniature Japanese red maple has also started its’ turn to fall colours ever so slightly, and I used them both in the arrangement and casually laid across the table. A walk along the park path was bursting with Queen Anne’s lace which give the arrangement a light and airy look.
Set a Simple English Cottage Autumn Place Setting
Woven placemats are the base of this pretty place setting. I chose ones with a softly scalloped edge to complement the scalloped edge of the green botanical salad plates. Green linen napkins peek out from between the plates, while twig handled flatware and classic stemmed wine glasses from Ikea add even more cottage charm.
Nothing too precious, but looks collected yet pulled together at the same time.
Shopping my Home First – But Flooding Didn’t Help!
If you have visited my tablescapes before, you know how I stress shopping your own home first and using what you have before shopping for anything new. I truly believe you can create a beautiful table without having to start from scratch every time.
Unfortunately, this time that became a little bit more challenging.
In late July and early August we suffered three storms, each just days apart, that have been called 100-year-storms, dropping almost 2 feet of rain in the process. Unfortunately our lower level flooded requiring a complete tear-out of flooring, drywall, and a whole lot of packing up to move things to safety.
My office was included in the flood. This is where I had shelves full of all my china, napkins, glassware, etc. Thankfully it was up high enough that nothing was damaged, but it all had to be packed up and put into storage until we can have everything put back together again.
For that reason I did treat myself to a few new pieces, but kept the cost low and purchased things that can be used for several occasions, all purchased from Homesense.

Tips for Creating The Look
- shop your home first
- choose a calming, neutral natural colour palette
- use natural fabrics such as linen or cotton
- add a floral component in the place settings, either salad plates or napkins for cottage charm
- use natural seasonal elements such as branches, pears, apples, or creamy coloured miniature pumpkins
- candles are a must for a cozy atmosphere
- use brass or wood candlesticks
- don’t feel the need to cover every inch of the table – leave room for your eyes to rest
- mix old and new for a collected, casual look
- use varying heights of candles
- embrace the charm of imperfect flowers from the garden

How to Transition This Table Into Lake Fall
This table could easily been transitioned into a stunning Thanksgiving table with just a few quick changes.
- introduce more pumpkins
- add deeper burgundy or rust tones
- add autumn leaves
- use darker linens

For me decorating for autumn is less about adding more and more seasonal decorations and more about noticing all the subtle changes that come with the changing of the season. A few garden flowers, some pears, candle light and a soft colour palette are enough to make the table feel ready for the season.

Maureen, You have done both Nancy Myers and English cottage very well! The neutral table top and an ironstone centerpiece, together with your cream dishes, are a calming base. I love your salad plates and scalloped edge placemats that you’ve purchased. I’m so sorry that you had the flooding from the 100 year storms. And I think the worst of something like that is the urgency and unplanned agenda that comes with having to box everything up. The green scalloped botanical plates are so pretty on the white plates and the scalloped woven placemats add a wonderful texture. The green napkins are understated and elegant, as is the neutral linen tablecloth. The vase is beautiful as a centerpiece and oh my gosh, your hydrangeas are perfection with the Queen Anne’s lace and Japanese Maple stems. I love the branches down the center of the table with the pears and tiny white pumpkins as a nod to fall, and the butter dish is a sweet touch. I’m so sorry about the flooding and what an ordeal that must be, but you managed to set a gorgeous table in the midst of it all.
